WORLD NEWS AGENCIES 21st CENTURY PHOTO COMPETITION – Second Awards Ceremony

As part of the III World Congress of News Agency taking place in Bariloche, we have opened the second photography contest. Graphic reporters will be able to send in their photographs –taken between August 2007 and July 2010- to participate in the following four categories: crisis, celebrations, disasters and sports. Entries will be received until 1st August.

WORLD NEWS AGENCIES 21st CENTURY PHOTO COMPETITION –First award ceremony

The Photography Contest was born as a feature of the II News Agencies World Congress. Forty agencies from different regions participated in the three categories- celebrations, disasters and sports- and altogether provided a vision of some of the most important events of the 21st century. On that occasion, the jury granted three photographs -one from Spanish agency EFE, one from French agency AFP and one from Azerbaijani agency Azertac- the award for best images of the first years of the 21st century.

A snapshot by Mahmud Hams, photographer of France Presse, portraying a group of Palestinians running for shelter from an Israeli missile, obtained the first prize in the disasters category. In that of sports, the prize was given to the image by Emilio Lavandeira, photographer of the EFE Agency, portraying two springboard competitors in the finals of the 10th World Swimming Championship in Barcelona, with the Sagrada Familia cathedral in the background. The first prize in the celebrations category was awarded to the photograph by Osman Kerimov, reporter of the Azerbaijan´s agency Azertac, in which two cocks are in the middle of a fight during the traditional New Year´s celebration in Azerbaijan.

The jury awarded special mentions to some images by the Cuban agency Prensa Latina and the Algerian agency APS in the disasters category; to the Vietnamese agency VNA and Slovakian agency TASR in the sports area; and to the Croatian agency HINA and Moroccan agency MAP in the celebrations category. Additionally, the jury awarded a special honourable mention to a photograph by Zafia Saifi from the Afghan agency Pajhwok, in which a female reporter is shot to death in her house, in recognition of those professionals who lose their lives in the line of duty.
